Waterproof mascara and long-lasting lipsticks contain the highest amount of organic fluoride, an indicator of PFAS. Pers and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a group of manufactured chemicals containing 9,000 different compounds that have existed since the 1940s. It does not decompose and accumulate in the environment and the human body over time, but persists for a long period of time, hence the nickname "eternal chemical." They have been linked to serious health effects such as cancer, hormonal disorders, weakened immune system, and low body weight.
Associated Press Mathew Daly reported that more than half of all cosmetics tested contained high levels of toxic alkyl perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). Additionally, researchers at the University of Notre Dame tested 231 frequently used makeup products, including liquid foundation, concealer, blusher, lipstick, and mascara, with approximately 82% of waterproof mascara, 63% of foundation, and 62% of liquid lipstick. It contains at least 0.384 micrograms of fluoride per square centimeter of fluoride, reports Maria Temming of Science News.
PFAS is absorbed through the mouth and thin mucous membranes close to the lacrimal duct, lipsticks are more likely to be accidentally swallowed, and in addition to direct exposure through makeup, PFAS can remain in drinking water after washing the skin, Science News reports.
Because PFAS does not break down in water, cosmetics that are designed to last longer or marketed as “wear-resistant,” “long-lasting,” and “water-resistant,” contain the highest levels of chemicals, reports the Guardian. However, in 88% of all products tested, the label does not disclose PFAS to consumers, making it nearly impossible to avoid the toxin, CNN reports.
PFAS remains an unavoidable ‘Forever pchemical’.
